Solar Panels, Batteries & Smart Tariffs in 2025:

Solar Panels, Batteries & Smart Tariffs in 2025: Your Top Questions Answered

Thinking about making the switch to solar? You aren't alone. At Wil-Lec, we’re seeing more Grimsby homeowners looking for energy independence than ever before.

But with new technology—and new energy tariffs—comes new questions. We’ve compiled the most common questions we get asked right now to help you separate the facts from the myths.

1. Do solar panels actually work during a British winter?

The short answer: Yes, solar panels work on daylight, not just heat or direct sunlight.

Many people believe that solar panels "turn off" when it's cloudy or cold. This is a myth. While output is naturally higher on a sunny July day, modern PV (Photovoltaic) panels are incredibly efficient at capturing diffuse light through clouds.

  • Key Fact: Solar panels can actually be more efficient in cooler temperatures because excessive heat can reduce output voltage.
  • Winter Reality: You will generate less power in December than June due to shorter days, but you will still be generating free electricity to offset your standing usage.

2. Is a solar battery worth the extra cost in 2025?

The short answer: For most households, a battery is now essential to maximize your Return on Investment (ROI).

A few years ago, batteries were a luxury. Today, with the gap between what you pay for energy vs. what you get paid to export it, a battery is the smartest investment.

  • Self-Consumption: Without a battery, you might only use 30-40% of the energy you generate (because you’re at work when the sun is shining). A battery captures that "lost" energy so you can boil the kettle or run the washing machine at 8 PM for free.
  • Grid Independence: It reduces your reliance on the grid during peak pricing hours (4 PM – 7 PM).

3. Can I save money with 'Time of Use' tariffs (like Octopus Go)?

The short answer: Yes. If you have a battery, these tariffs can slash your bills by allowing you to buy cheap power overnight.

Standard energy tariffs charge you a flat rate (e.g., 24p/kWh) no matter when you use electricity. "Time of Use" tariffs—such as Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus, or Agile—offer much cheaper rates overnight (often between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM) to encourage you to use power when the grid is quiet.

  • The "Force Charge" Strategy: You don't just have to charge your Electric Vehicle (EV) during these cheap windows. You can set your home battery to force-charge from the grid at ~7p overnight. Then, during the day, your home runs off that cheap stored power instead of paying the peak daytime rate.
  • The Winter Benefit: In winter, when solar generation is naturally lower, this strategy is a game-changer. You effectively fill your "fuel tank" (battery) for pennies while you sleep, ensuring you rarely pay full price for electricity even on dark, rainy days.

4. Do I need planning permission to install solar panels in Grimsby?

The short answer: In 99% of cases, no. Solar panels are usually considered "Permitted Development."

You generally do not need to apply for planning permission to install solar panels on a house, provided:

  • They do not protrude more than 200mm from the roof slope.
  • They are not installed above the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney).
  • You do not live in a listed building or a strict conservation area.
  • Note: Flat roof installations often have different rules, so always check with us first.

5. What happens to my solar power if there is a power cut?

The short answer: Standard solar systems will shut down during a power cut for safety, even if you have a battery.

This surprises many people. For safety reasons (to protect engineers working on the lines), your inverter must disconnect from the grid during an outage.

  • The Solution: If you want power during a blackout, you need a specific setup known as EPS (Emergency Power Supply). This requires a specific type of battery and inverter installation. If backup power is a priority for you, let us know during the quote stage so we can spec the right equipment.

6. Will solar panels damage my roof?

The short answer: No, a professional installation actually protects the section of the roof it covers.

Solar panels are mounted on rails which are securely fixed to the rafters, not just the tiles. This means the weight is evenly distributed. The panels themselves act as a shield against wind, rain, and UV damage for the tiles underneath them. At Wil-Lec, we always conduct a structural survey before installation to ensure your roof is ready.
