MCS Shows Strong Growth in Renewable Energy Installations in Q1 2023

The latest figures from the MCS Data Dashboard show that there were 60,004 installations of small-scale renewable energy technologies in the UK in Q1 2023. This represents a significant increase of 114% on the number of installations in the same period in 2022.

Solar PV technologies accounted for the majority of installations in Q1 2023, with 50,719 systems installed. This was the highest deployment of solar PV since Q4 2015. The number of solar PV installations in March 2023 (17,497) was also the highest monthly deployment of the technology since December 2015.

Battery storage also enjoyed its best quarter for installations in the BUS to date, with 351 systems installed. This represents over 50% of the scheme total to date (621 installations). Battery storage is the newest installation standard that MCS has introduced for its certified contractors, reflecting consumers' growing interest in self-consumption and electrical storage systems in combination with solar PV.

These figures show that the UK is continuing to make progress in its transition to a low-carbon economy. The growth in renewable energy installations is a positive sign, and it is encouraging to see that consumers are increasingly interested in these technologies.

Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS, commented: “The year has got off to a remarkable start as our robust, near-real-time data demonstrates how we are playing a vital role in domestic decarbonisation.

“As more people look to decarbonise their homes, installation quality of small-scale renewables is vital, so it’s encouraging to see the record growth in MCS certified contractors. Solar PV deployment continues its exponential rise."

Wil-Lec GRP Ltd Managing Director Steve Wilson said "These latest figures from MCS reflect our own installation data as we see increases in solar panel installations due to increased energy prices and home and business owners wanting to not only reduce their energy bills but also increase the value of their home as well as enjoying energy independence that solar allows."
